Subject: Urgent investigate Father Carney's case
Dear Attorney General Reno:
I support the growing number of US citizens who are fasting in Honduras to give weight to their call for a complete investigation into the case of Father James Carney. This priest, likewise a US citizen, died 1983 at the hands of the Honduran military, and agents of our government are alleged to have participated directly or indirectly in his unusually cruel execution.
I support the demand for a complete investigation in this case. The overwhelming amount of material that was deleted in related documents that have been declassified leads to doubts. The explanation that it was all "irrelevant material" only intensifies the doubts.
It is time for our country to come clean about its participation in unacceptable violations of human rights during the course of counter- insurgency operations in Central America during the 70's and 80's. Our national conscience should be troubled until this happens. Impunity is one of the most vexing items of unfinished business in the Central (and Latin) American peace processes. We who pride ourselves in being an exemplary democracy must give a good example in this matter.
Please respond soon and adequately to the demands of the fasters!
Sincerely,
