Managua, August 28, 2001 -- The Instituto Henry George's sixth intensive "Comprender la Economía" Political Economy class graduated 62 students on August 8th. Almost all of the class of 84 who finished the course signed the IHG's ongoing petition requesting government officials to be made aware of the Georgist remedy and to implement feasibility studies. Of the 26 "Superior" level graduates who registered 80% or more in their exams and final essay, 20 attended the follow-up volunteer participation meeting the following week. Immediately following the graduation of the sixth class, the announcement for the seventh CE course was published; it commenced on August 27 with 96 students in attendance. Meanwhile, the teacher training course continues to advance with 6 students in regular attendance. A second training course was initiated with 10 graduates from the sixth CE course. Students in the first course participate in training the students of the second course and the more advanced will be participating in teaching the seventh course.

Radio Program Back on the Air
Managua, August 28, 2001 -- The IHG's radio
program "Comprender La Economía" started airing for
its second season on August 21st. The program airs for an hour at
11:00 AM every Tuesday, now on Radio Mujer 94.7 FM in Managua.
The program incorporates a summary of the main points of the
Georgist argument and offers the Georgist remedy for
consideration of its listening audience. The program also
includes a news commentary segment as well as a quiz question
with a prize for the listener who answers correctly. Future plans
include the invitation of Nicaraguan economists to the show to
discuss the Georgist remedy. Stay tuned...!
IHG
Outreach Projects Gaining Ground
Managua, August 28, 2001 -- Due to the confused
state of the Nicaraguan election process, there seems to be an
opportunity for the IHG to inject the Georgist remedy into the
national debate over solving the ongoing economic crisis here.
Both of the major parties have a limited concept of
macro-economic policy and are being criticized for it in the
media. The IHG's various educational outreach projects include a
University campus survey and outreach project, a letter writing
campaign to the major media, gathering signature from past CE
graduates on a petition to the government for a feasibility study
of LVT/tax elimination, publication of the IHG's first land price
study, the production of a photo-documentary to later be
developed into an educational video for airing on national TV.
Starting this week, the IHG initiated a new survey/educational
project targeted at the small and medium business sector. The
purpose of the project is to gain information about the cost
pressure of the current rent/taxation system which is causing the
current economic crisis, to educate those surveyed about the
Georgist analysis and remedy, and later to invite those
businesses to a national conference on that subject. Another new
intiative of the Instituto is to expand the letter writing
campaign to include direct visits of IHG volunteers to various
media offices to solicit media attention to the Georgist remedy
as our project grows in public awareness. The IHG has received
positive indications from one political party which has our
information packet and consultation proposal in hand, that they
are studying the information. Follow up contacts are in process.
The sense is that we may be able to reach a preliminary
breakthrough point in public consciousness before the elections
of November 4th.
IHG
Seeking Permanent Location in Managua
Managua, August 28, 2001 -- With the growing
number of active volunteers, the IHG program should be growing by
leaps and bounds, but there is a limitation that is holding back
the process, and that is the present lack of an adequate facility
to house the Instituto. Currently the IHG is housed in a three
room townhouse which can comfortably accomodate meetings of up to
20 volunteers and activities of 10 volunteers at one time,
without provision for receiving the public and limited office
space. The IHG is currently searching for land to buy for the
development of a permanent facility which will include ample
classroom, meeting, and office space as well as space for a
library/bookstory and lounge. The IHG considers this step in the
development of the Instituto key to employing the potential
volunteer participation and for gaining the credibility necessary
to further the influence of its projects. The IHG's short-term
strategy is to rent a larger facility while raising funds for the
purchase and development of the desired land property.
Individuals interested in supporting the fundraising effort are
invited to contact the director of the Instituto.
