Profitable Crops for Remote Zones with Hot-Humid Climates of Nicaragua

Abstract

The Austrian Cooperation Agency works in two buffer-zones for hot-humid forest reserves of the tropical country Nicaragua. In these, the dry season is short, uncertain and Ultisoles are the predominant soils. Agroforestry- silvopastoral- an forestry- systems are presented, adaptable for the agro-ecological and socio-economical conditions, consisting the species (timber): Mahogany (Swietena macrophylla), Cedar (Cedrela odorata), Salmwood (Cordia alliodora); (spices): Cassia and Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum syn C. vera, C. aromaticum syn C. cassia y C. burmanii), Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), Black / White and Green Pepper (Piper nigrum), Allspice (Pimienta dioica); (non timber forest products): 'Rattan' ('Woman's Reed', Philodendron rigidifolium), Cat Claw (Uncaria tomentosa); (stimulators): Cacao (Theobroma cacao), Coffee Robusta (Coffea canephora) and the fruit trees Cashew (Anacardium occidentale), Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) y Pulasán (N. mutabile).

Experimentation- and verification requirements are outlined, using a simple cropping design. Socio-economic factors are analyzed as well, particularly gender aspects in view of the proposed species and cropping systems. The profitability is calculated and market opportunities for these crops investigated on national and international level. Go to Summary (Spanish)

Contourlines: Highly Productive !

Abstract

Factors to establish contour lines - combination of forage grasses (Andropogon gayanus, Kunth), timber trees (Azadirachta indica, A. Juss.) and multiple purpose trees (Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp.) - are examined. The average yield of a contour line (1 m wide, dry material, 9 repetitions, exclusive of A. indica), was 9.8 kg/m total biomass and 7.1 kg/m of forage.

A check list is provided, lining out the potential advantages and disadvantages of contour lines and direct seeding.

An agroclimatogram is presented, which allows analysis of agroclimatological factors and similarities. The diagram includes data for temperature, precipitation, potential evapotranspiration and water budget.

Check Leaf Cutting Ants with the Delicious Canavalia Bean !

Abstract

A biological method to control leaf cutting ants (Atta spp.) using Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC. bean is outlined, including the efficient traditional practice of broadcasting seed. Recipes to prepare canavalia like 'French Beans' and in salad.

Adoption of Agroclimatograms for Assisting Species Selection in the Tropics

Abstract

Agroclimatograms are presented for assisting species selection in the tropics by analyzing agroclimatological factors and similarities. The diagrams include data for temperature, precipitation, water budget and potential evapotranspiration (PET) A computer program to calculate the PET is provided and Adansonia digitata L. (Baobab) is used as an illustrative example.

The Correct Cut in Tree Pruning

Abstract

Proper techniques for pruning trees are outlined and a brief introduction to their physiology is given. The correct cut of branches and co- dominant stems are explained. Do not leave stubs when pruning branches nor do flash cuts ! Cut as close as possible to the collar without hurting it !

Organic Cocoa: Experiences of Waslala, Nicaragua

Abstract

The management of organic cocoa in traditional and semi- technically agroforestry systems is described, including nursery management, prevention of pests and diseases, establishment of the upper stratum, associations with other crops, pruning techniques and its benefits. It is concluded, that these production systems potentially protect the humid tropical forest remaining in the zone, and are profitable for the producers of Waslala, Nicaragua.

Producing Concentrate and Controlling House-Flies with Manure Traps

Abstract

Simple but efficient traps are described, using basically pig-manure to encourage flies to deposit their eggs into the trap. The emerging muggers may be fed directly to poultry or the pupae processed to high value flour (64% digestible protein).
