Introduction of direct seeding for combined contour lines (grasses, timber, shrubs), and covercrops / green manure. Advice of the program in social forestry, specifically in view of perennials of multiple use. Elaboration of various participative pre- feasibility studies for the "Organic Cacao" project proposal.

November 1991 - January 1995, Managua, Nicaragua: Advisor in Agroforestry. MARENA - CIM, FRG

Adviser in Agroforestry for the Ministry for Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA), Division for Forestry Research, supported financially by the Center for International Migration (CIM, Frankfurt). Responsible with emphasis in research on: Sustainable production by low external input agroforestry for soil fertility and water management:

(1) Promotion and direction of three field trials with combined contour lines and cover crops, totaling de 8 hm2.

2) Build-up, program, analysis and interpretation of 3 complete (WMO- standard) computerized agro- climatic stations and elaboration of a computerized water balance model.

3) Co- advise of programs with agroforestry components, for which MARENA signed as counterpart, especially in view of soil fertility, wind breaks, providence trials, alley cropping and traditional agroforestry homegardens.

The work was introduced with success into the division for forest research. The trials have been overtaken completely and are carried through as demonstration plots and agroforestry for soil fertility (erosion control) has become an integrated part of the activities in the mentioned division.

Further assignments were the statistical analysis of stowed trials, which, out of statistical view, manifested a problematical experimental design, as well as tutoring of MSc - students of the local University for Agriculture (UNA, themes of agroforestry / erosion control). In collaboration with local NGO's the technologies were tried to put into practice, with a target group of app. 25 farmers in the region of Masaya.

Leadership: As adviser at the division 'Agroforestry for Soil Fertility' in an equipment of 8 colleagues, steering of the trials and program implementation in the Masaya region.

January 1991 - August 1991, Witzenhausen, Germany: Scientific Collaborator. University, Gh Kassel

Preparation for the tasks in Nicaragua - at the Institute for Crop Science, University, Gh Kassel, with the target to do a PhD (combined contour lines, quantitative and qualitative measurements of erosion with Wieschmeyer- trials). Due to the work load during the stay in Nicaragua (integrated Expert), the PhD could not be done.

Furthermore collaboration at the recently, since December 1990, founded Institute, with focal point on the evaluation / purchase of climatic chambers.

Co-ordination of the reforestation of waste- land by natural revegetation, with 2 forestry engineers. Advice to scientific research on agroforestry research (alley cropping) by a PhD- student. Responsible for the biological stabilization of gullies and drainage systems, which were built by the road-construction-engineers of the Regional Administration (DANIDA - program). Advice to 2 foresters in nursery management and design of nursery trials (root taking management: inoculation, nutrition, pruning) for means of reforestation on waste-land.

A misled starting point, which could be demonstrated by the study. In the course of the study, also investigated possibilities of improvements for the existing irrigation system. Direct relevant relationship to the target group was made by a marching bee program. (2) For the surroundings and the urban area of Concepción. It investigated the potential for small scale animal husbandry, particularly hens and rabbits, for the improved provision with proteins for the population. The study was executed in the framework of multiple activities of the institute, which concentrated on rural development of the region.

Calculation of the PET-Penman potential evapo- transpiration on the same basis, as well as the water budget, occupying proper developed programs in AmiPro and Improv. In continuation data simulations for various soil types and crops (grains, semiperennials and trees).
